8월의 마지막 일요일을 맞는다. 다른 쪽에서는 허리케인 아이린 으로 떠들썩 하지만 이곳은 거짓말처럼 파~란 하늘에 가을기분의 따가운 햇볕이 작열을 하는 한가한 느낌의 일요일.. 우리 집의 ‘숙명의 적’ pet duo 토우비(Tobey, dog)와 이지(Izzie, 고양이) 를 보아도 한가한 느낌을 받는 것이, 둘 다 완전히, 절대적으로 ‘평화롭게’ 낮잠에 떨어진 모습이 정말로 한가한 느낌을 주는 것이다. 나에게는 이런 한가한 순간들도 ‘좋아하는 시간’에 속한다.

오늘 일요일의 미국본당 미사에서는 올해의 대림절 (교회력 신년의 시작, 올해는 11월 27일)부터 부분적으로 바뀌게 되는 영어 미사의식에 대한 설명이 시작되었다. 정확히 말하면 미사의식이 바뀌는 것이 아니고 미사의식에서 하는 문구(text) 들이 바뀌는 것이다. 현재 영어 미사는 1975년부터 사용된 것이라고 하니까, 상당한 기간 신자들이 쓰던 것이라 이것이 조금이라도 바뀌게 되면 아무래도 처음에는 불편할 것이다. 문제는 “왜” 바꾸어야 하는가에 있다.

결론부터 말하면 이것은 바티칸 교황청에서 지시를 한 것이 아니고, 그 동안 쓰던 영어미사의 ‘결점’을 보완하려고 문구를 원래 ‘라틴어 미사의 정신’에 더 가깝게 번역을 한 것이었다. 그러니까 원래의 ‘영어번역’에 문제가 있다고 본 것이고, 그것을 늦었지만 바꾼 것이다. 나의 의문은 그러면 다른 언어, 예를 들면 한국어 미사는 어떻게 된 것인가 하는 것이다. 그러니까 그곳이 영어로부터 번역을 한 것이었다면 그쪽도 바꾸어야 할 것인데, 들은 바에 의하면 아마도 한국말 미사는 이미 바뀌었다고 들은 것 같다. 현재 이곳의 한국본당, 아틀란타 순교자 성당에서는 이미 바뀐 것을 쓰고 있을 듯한데, 현재 우리가 주일미사를 그곳으로 가지를 않아서 100% 확실치는 않다.

라틴어 미사는 1970년에(그 훨씬 전에 있었던 바티칸 2차 공의회(the Second Vatican Council, 1963)의 정신에 의해서) 바뀐 이후 한번도 바뀌지 않았다. 그리고 조금 놀라운 사실은, 1970년 이전에는 세계적으로 모두가 라틴어로 미사를 드렸다고 한다. 어떻게 그 어려운 라틴어로 미사를 보았는지 상상하기는 힘들지만 그것은 사실이었던 모양이다. 그러니까 한국에서도 그때는 라틴어를 쓴 것이다. 영어와 라틴어는 그 근원이나 비슷하지만 한국과 같이 ‘전혀 다른 계통의 언어권’ 에서는 어떠했을까? 하지만 역시 중요한 문제는 어떻게 ‘현지 언어’가 원래 라틴어의 ‘정신’을 충실하게 전할 수 있는가 하는 것인데, 참 어려운 작업이었을 것이다.

모든 것을, ‘천천히, 재미있게’ 하려는 미국 천주교인들, 이것도 ‘응석을 부리면서’ 9월부터 조금씩 ‘연습’을 하면서 목표인 대림절까지 갈 모양이다. 9월 초부터 일주일에 ‘한가지 씩’ 을 ‘연습’해 보는 것이다. 자세히 보면 크게 바뀐 것도 아니던데 이렇게까지 하는 것을 보면 참 본 받을 만하다.
