김시스터즈 특급, Kim Sisters Express

얼마 전에 1960년 내가 서울 중앙중학교 1학년 다닐 때와 그 해 일어난 4.19 학생혁명을 생각하며 그 즈음의 미국 주간화보잡지 LIFE를 뒤져 보다가 뜻밖의 반가운 사진 기사를 보게 되었다. 바로 그 당시 대한민국의 자랑, 김시스터즈에 관한 기사와 사진들을 보게 된 것이다. 그 훨씬 이전에 그 세 자매가 ‘목장의 노래‘를 송민도씨와 같이 부르는 video를 보며 그 당시를 회상하기도 했고, 1950년대 피난도시 부산에서 촬영을 한 국산영화 ‘청춘 쌍곡선‘ 에서 역시 세 자매가 간호원으로 나온 것도 보았지만 그것이 전부였다.

목장의 노래, 송민도, 김시스터즈

나는 그 당시 어린 국민학생이었기에 그 영화를 볼 수는 없었고, TV가 없었으니 (아마도 그 당시서울에 TV를 가진 집은 손으로 꼽을 정도..) 그 세 자매의 모습을 볼 수도 없었다. 그저 라디오로 목소리를 들었을 정도였다. 하지만 당시 ‘희망의 상징’이었던 미국으로 간다고 들었을 때, 섭섭하지만 얼마나 모두 자랑스럽게 느꼈는지 모른다. 일종의 ‘특상품 수출‘이었다고 할까..

그녀들은 그렇게 해서 완전히 미국에 정착을 했고, 가끔 귀국을 해서 선을 보이기도 했다. 이번에 LIFE 잡지에 나온 기사를 읽으면서 그 세 자매는 정말 재주가 넘치는 멋진 trio임을 알 수 있게 되었다. 사진을 보면 아마도 Chicago에서 잠시 공연을 할 당시 취재를 한 것 같고, 김시스터즈의 manager와 사이가 좋았는지, 시카고 근방 그 manager의 어머니 농장에서 머무르며 미국의 일반 가정과, 서민문화를 접하는 것을 알 수 있다.

그 동안 내가 잘못 알았던 사실은, 그녀들이 1950년대 중반에 미국으로 갔다고 생각했는데 이 기사를 보니 그 것은 1959년경이었다. 게다가 그녀들은 놀랍게도 거의 국민학생 때부터 노래를 불렀다는 사실도 알게 되었다. 8남매의 대가족이었는데 어떻게 노래를 부르기 시작했는지는 나는 아직도 잘 모른다. Googling을 해 보면 순간적으로 알 수도 있겠지만, 그것은 당분간은 모르고 지내기로 했다.

이 사진 기사에서 새로 알게 된 사실 중에는:

10년 전, 그러니까 6.25 당시부터, 그러니까 아주 어린 시절부터 노래를 했고,
그들의 talent를 본 어떤 전 GI, 가 미국에 가서 활동하도록 주선을 해서 일년 전부터 Las Vegas casino 에서 공연을 했고,
최근에는 Chicago의 Polynesian Village에서 공연을 했고,
이 세 자매는 철저히 한국식 생활방식을 고수하며 상당한 금액의 일주간 공연료 $2500의 거의 전부를 서울의 ‘대가족: 어머니, 5명의 형제, 자매’ 에게 송금을 하며,
남자관계를 철저히 관리해서, 공연이 끝나서 남자에게 초대를 받으면 반드시 세 자매가 ‘단체행동’을 해서 ‘scandal’을 방지했다.

여기의 기사 본문을 읽어보면 그 trio가 어떻게 미국의 문화, 노래들을 배우며 미국에서 적응했는지를 더 자세히 알 수 있다.

Three Korean Kims and Their Kayagum

When Min Ja, Ai Ja and Sook Ja Kim enter wearing their colorful hangobs and start strumming on their Kayagums, the song they go into is Tom Dooley. For the Korean girls now appearing in the Polynesian Village in Chicago, the old mountain tune is a mass of phonetics that means nothing to them but is a delight to their audiences. Americans find the Oriental touch on U.S. tunes a highly refreshing one, and just one year after leaving Seoul the Kim Sisters are an all-out nightclub hit over here.

The act began 10 years ago when the girls were taught Ole Buttermilk Sky and Candy and Cake by U.S. troops in Korea. Min Ja sang off key and Ai Ja chewed gum while she sang, but to the GIs they were the Oriental’s answer to the Andrews Sisters. Last year an ex-GI named Bob McMackin who had heard them in Seoul brought the Kims over. The girls learn their songs by note since they know little English. They managed to master the phrase “lots of luck” and could enunciate it perfectly as an exit line. But to audiences it lacked Oriental character and the Kims have changed back to “rots of ruck”.

After a year in the U.S. the Kim sisters still keep the custom of Korea. Most of the $2,500 a week they earn by singing here is dutifully sent back to their mother and five brothers and sisters in Seoul. They are faithful to a Korean tradition that a girl should not go out alone until she is 23. Sook Ja, who is the oldest Kim and the trio’s spokesman, solves the stage-door Johnny problem by telling the men who want to take her out after the nightclub show that her younger sisters have to come along. Ai Ja, 20, and Min Ja, 18, do what Sook Ja tells them to. A recent visit to an Illinois farm was a welcome break from their hectic life, which they find involves continual adjustment. In Chicago they miss the noise of Las Vegas where they had to sing a lot louder so they could be heard over the din of the slot machines.
