사월의 노래

아.. 아틀란타에 정녕 봄이 오고 있는가? 빼앗긴 들에도 봄은 오는가..라는 고3때 국어책에서 본 시의 제목처럼.. 이번 겨울은 동서남북의 구별 없이 무차별하게 춥고 을씨년스러웠다. 하기야 Florida와 Hawaii를 제외한 전역이 눈이 덮여 있다고 뉴스에도 나오지 않았던가? 그래서 그런지 Obama의 global warming agenda도 따라서 조금 잠잠해졌나 할 정도다.

공식적으로 춘분이 거의 열흘이나 지나고 내일은 사월이다. 진짜 봄인 것이다. 새벽에 아직도 central heating이 나오긴 하지만 이제부터는 아주 따뜻한 낮과 아주 싸늘한 밤이 계속되는 건조한 그런 나날이 되지 않을까? 4월.. April shower brings May flower라고 오래 전에 아이들이 학교에서 배워서 나에게 써 먹었던 것이 생각난다. 그런 만큼 싸늘한 4월의 비도 연상이 된다.

하지만 나에겐 한국가곡 “사월의 노래”가 더 생각나는 계절이기도 하다. 1963년 서울 중앙고등학교 1학년 때, 담임 선생님이자 음악 선생님이셨던 김 대붕 선생님이 좋아 하셨다던 가곡, 사월의 노래.. 우리들에게 정성스레 가르쳐 주셨다. 특히 작곡가이신 김순희교수님을 잊지 않을 정도로 언급을 하셨다. 혹시 그 교수님과 무슨 인연이라도 있었던 것은 아닐까? 그 노래를 들을 때마다 선생님 생각이 나곤 한다.

노래와 함께 가사까지 또렷이 기억이 난다. 선생님은 지금 연세가 어느 정도나 되셨을까? 짐작에 아마 여든을 바라보실 연세가 아니실까. 그렇다면 요새 같은 세상에서는 건강만 좋으시면 큰 문제가 없으시리라. 기억에 선생님은 해방 직후에 고등학교 학생이셨다. 어떤 글에서 (아마도 중앙학교 교지에서) “국대안 반대 데모 때 열심히 영어공부를 해서 뒤떨어 졌던 성적을 올렸다” 라고 하셨는데 그때는 내가 태어날 무렵이었다 그때 고등학생이셨으면 최소한 나보다 15살은 많았을 것이다.

내가 천주교 신자가 된 후에 가톨릭 성가 집에서 우연히 선생님의 이름을 보았다. 그래서 선생님이 천주교 신자임을 알았고 성심여대에서 교편을 잡고 계셨음도 알게 되었다. 아마도 중앙학교에서 음악을 가르치실 당시에도 천주교 신자였을 것 같다. 물론 100% 확실치는 않지만.

 

Extremely annoying Artisteer

Who designed Artisteer? What kind of software engineers are behind this otherwise excellent software? Ideas behind this are really simply brilliant. This is an example of expert system for website frontend design. It simply added an ‘expert’ layer on top of ‘standard, ordinary’ web design software. Unless you want minute controls over very detailed cosmetic details, this software’s included ‘expert’ layer simply shows you not-too-many features and choice without overwhelming user. Then, what’s annoying? Simple. When it opens first time, it always does as maximized taking up all the screen. Why? I don’t know. Usually windows software remembers previous window size before closing. This simply ignores, forget everything! Why did you do that? Utterly stupid!  One more thing, whenever upgrading to newer release, it stupidly demands to enter license key, pretending know nothing about already installed and running version… it amazes me dearly.. what’s kind of software people behind this stupid logic?

Back to Joomla

I’m back to Joomla! to understand more about it. Previously, DotNetNuke was my choice for my experimental website for some time before I totally abandoned it for its complexity and instability. I’m not sure why it was so unstable, frequently crashed exposing ‘ugly’ asp.net error codes. Then I found this LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) open source blog and CMS software like WordPress, Joomla!. Miraculously, these software never crashed while on operation! I was hooked very much since, never looked back especially to ASP.NET based bloatware.

Already understanding CMS in general, I dived directly into Joomla! hoping to setup a working website in few days but didn’t work out that way. The system itself was solid-rock stable but it was not as easy as I hoped to learn. So called, steep learning curve fits to this system, so I bought a Joomla! book to jump start my project.  The book was <<Joomla! A USER’S GUIDE, Building A Successful Joomla! Powered Website>> by Barrie M. North. Presumably, it appeared to be a good book from Amazon’s review. How wrong I was…  In short, this is one of the worst book I’ve ever read. It, however, did a very good job to confuse me. I seriously doubt the author actually followed the example screen shots against sample code.  They simply didn’t match! Let me show some example of what I said on my coming blog.

어느날의 작고, 단순한 생각들…

그렇게 포근하고 푸른 하늘의 날씨도 역시 다시 며칠 못 가서 하루 종일 비와 싸늘함의 날씨로 변했다. 기분에 이곳의 가뭄은 100% 완전히 사라졌다고 해도 틀림이 없을 듯 하다. 나는 비를 참 좋아하는데 바깥에서 일을 할 때는 조금 성가신 점도 있다. 이번 기회에 조그만 storage shelter를 몇 개 지으려고 생각 중이다. 그러면 비를 맞아서 문제가 되는 yard tool들 보관하는데 도움이 될 것이다.

제값을 주고 산 책  WordPress Plugin Development 를 어제부터 본격적으로 읽기 시작했다. Amazon Review가 비교적 좋았다. 저자의 이름이 아무래도 Slavic 해서 이것 또 broken English로 쓰여진 것이나 아닐까 우려를 했는데 그게 아니었다. 거의 American English로 손색이 없는 듯 하다.

하지만 몇 군데는 별 수 없이 bad grammar가 눈에 뜨인다. 이 책의 제일 특징은 ‘잔소리’가 별로 없고 거의 곧바로 본론으로 시작을 하고 ‘결과’를 확실히 보여주는 아주 작은 project 5개로 이루어 졌다는 것이다. 다 읽고 이해를 하면 아마도 몇 개의 practical plugin을 design할 수 있게 되리라는 희망을 가진다.

현재 우리 집에는 Tobey라는 개와 Izzie라는 고양이가 같이 살고 있다. Tobey는 2005년에 baby때부터 키운 mixed Dachshund 인데 이제는 사실 정이 너무나 들어서 식구와 같다. 전에 키우다가 2003년에 타계한 Lucky (Cocker Spaniel)는 밖에서 키워서 그런 맛은 몰랐다.

한가지 문제는 그 녀석이 너무나 hyper-active한 것이다. 감정표현이 너무나 요란하다 보니까 문제가 있는 것이다. Izzie는 2006년 여름에 우리 집 앞에서 baby때 주운 고양이다. 누가 버리고 간 듯 싶었다. 몇 년간 Washington DC에 사는 새로니가 데리고 있다가 지난 크리스마스 때 다시 데리고 와서 우리 집에서 살게 되었다. 그 동안 서로 적응하느라 힘들었지만 요새는 그런대로 적응이 되어서 살만하다. 처음에는 고양이가 개를 무서워할 줄 알았는데 결과적으로는 정 반대였다. 고양이가 어찌나 defensive한지 개가 그 옆으로 가는 것을 꺼릴 정도니까..

내가 사는 곳의 library는 Cobb County Library system인데 내가 자주 가는 곳은 그 중에 제일 큰 Central Library다. 그곳에는 외국어로 된 책들도 꽤 있는 편인데 그 중에서도 한국어로 된 책들도 많은 편이다. 공식적인 것은 모르지만 내가 보기에도 거의 300권 정도가 되지 않을까? 대부분이 2000년 말에 출판된 것을 보면 구입한지 몇 년이 안된 것들일 것이다.

나는 정말 오랜만에 한국어로 된 책들을 보게 되었다. 하지만 catalog system에서 한글을 처리를 못해서 거의 한글발음을 그대로 영어로 옮겨 적은 관계로 그걸로 한글을 만들려면 정말 애를 먹는다. 어떤 것은 거의 불가능할 때도 있다.이때는 일본어의 발음이 부러워지기도 한다. 그들의 발음은 영어로 적어도 100% 다시 일본발음으로 바꿀 수 있으니까.

Strange Neighbor

It’s not exactly strange, but more annoying even infuriating experience with them. The annoying side would be called very childish that is ‘camp fire’ at their backyard anytime they feel like it. Once, I almost called local fire department fearing of uncontrolled spread of fire into their neighbor including ours. They didn’t seem to care of anything around their house. On windier day, the soot from fire were unbearable, ruining laundry hanging on backyard’s.

But mother of all ‘strangeness’ is this. When they moved in, ranch style fence between ours were replaced by ‘Berlin wall’ style 8+ feet, doubled-up one. Of course, they bothered to do it.  Well, it’s fine with us. Later, I noticed a strange door along the fence.. well what the hell was that? Of course, lock was on their side with obvious reason. Then it was forgotten.

One day, I noticed something looked ‘strange’ near the fence, but couldn’t tell why. Much much later, I was shocked to find one of a small tree was mercilessly cut down, leaving much mess around it. I almost concluded the storm somehow managed to have it down from previous experience. But after careful observation, it was ‘cut’ not fallen, very clean cut by people’s saw.

Well, who the hell did it? No surveillance picture, no witnesses, nothing. Is it time to call police? Not yet. Somehow, I got a feeling who did it. that camp fire people! After contacting them, it was revealed they actually sneaked into through very convenient door, cut our tree! They argued the tree was spreading mess onto their ‘beautiful’ lawn. What the **** is this strange people thinking? The true purpose of that strange door now exposed. They were conveniently dumping their yard waste onto our side time to time.

Now, the best of all, they were claiming this: A few inches from the current fence line into our side is actually their property! They meant the fence was built along more onto their side leaving a few inches to ‘dump’, ‘cut tree’, on purpose. The strange door was there to come across. What? Are these people real? I found then a ‘true’ property line surveyed by a professional, saying true property line falls much more into their side! Anyway, this is so strange.. No further dialog was attempted, this is not the kind of people to ‘talk’ with. Fortunately, they moved out since, Hallelujah!

눈이 내리는 데.. 산에도 들에도 내리는 데.. 한명숙 씨의 1960년대의 노래가 생각난다. 이곳의 눈은 평상적으로 ‘뉴스’ 깜이 되는데.. 그게 벌써 올 겨울 들어서 3번째이다. 차 운전에 거의 지장이 없는 데도 학교는 거의 오후가 되자마자 파했다. 2월 달의 함박눈에 비해서 오늘의 눈은 거의 진눈깨비에 가까웠다. 하지만 몇 시간 동안은 앞이 안 보일 정도로 내렸다.

연숙은 오랜만에 작을 딸과 Buford Hwy의 어느 식당에서 점심을 한다고 한다. 눈이 내리는 모습을 봐서 조금은 걱정이 된다. 물론 freeway는 전혀 문제가 없을 듯 하지만 우리 subdivision으로 들어오는 길은 언제나 신경이 쓰인다. 아주 steep한 언덕배기가 있기 때문이다. 몇 년 전에도 이것이 문제가 되어서 밖으로 나갈 수가 없었다. 물론 그때 우리는 ‘식량’이 풍부했기 때문에 걱정은 없었지만 다른 집들은 며칠 동안 grocery를 갈수 가 없어서 고생을 했다고 들었다.

 

이곳에 눈이 내리는 모습과 내린 후의 풍경은 정말 그림처럼 아름답다. Midwest에 살 때는 그런 것을 거의 못 느끼면서 살았다. 너무나 춥고, 얼어붙고 휘날리는 눈은 사실 거의 공포의 대상이다. 차라도 어디에서 고립된 상태로 있게 된다면 거의 panic상태가 될 것이다.

하지만 여기는 워낙 눈에 대한 대비가 안된 곳이라, 미리부터 예방을 철저히 해서 그런 걱정은 없을 것이다. 눈이 온다 하면 미리 다 집으로 ‘도망’을 가니까 말이다. 처음 이곳으로 이사를 와서 그런 광경을 보고 참 우습기도 했지만 차츰 이곳 사람들의 ‘지혜’를 배우게 되었다.

아마도 이번 눈이 올 겨울의 마지막이 될 듯 싶다. 그래서 더욱 더 즐기려고 하는 지도 모른다. 하지만 모른다. 1993년 3월 중순에 그 유명한 storm of the century가 왔었다. 그때는 지금처럼 즐길 여유가 없었다. 눈과 함께 바람까지 불어서 모든 것이 ‘공포’ 그 자체였으니까. 그래서 storm of the century가 되었는지도 모른다. 그 이후로는 3월 말 정도가 되어야 안심을 하고 한 기억이다.
